Vegetable Wastes Composting
Final report May 2002 (WR0195000) by Enviros
There will soon be restrictions applied with regards to farm land spreading in the future, which will cause concern as they will limit the disposal options for raw vegetable wastes from packing operations .
Alternative outlets for these wastes, such as selling them as animal feed, are increasingly becoming rare in the predominantly arable/vegetable growing regions of the UK.
However, by composting these wastes with other green wastes, a safe product for agriculture may be created that can be applied to fields or bagged and sold. This project aimed to demonstrate this, and by holding working seminars for the regional farming group, helped to encourage the take-up of composting with the aim of diverting these materials away from landfill disposal.
The other wastes composted with the wet vegetable wastes included packing waste (cardboard and wood). Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) fines from WRG's operations were also separately composted with green wastes.
Composting was carried out in a contained system - the Sirocco - and compared this system with traditional windrowing.
