Enviros meets Minister for Environment and Agri-Environment at the Royal Show (Aug 2003)
Phil Wallace of Enviros Consulting Ltd met Elliot Morley the Minister for Environment and Agri-Environment at the Royal Show.
At the Royal Show at the beginning of July 2003, Enviros participated in a composting feature that attracted many farmers and those interested in composting. Enviros were promoting their project on the use of compost in agriculture funded by the Shanks first fund and their new service for the design and construction of composting facilities.

Enviros are managing a series of field trials at seven sites in England. Composted materials are being applied annually in conjunction with other fertilizers and compared with control treatments to assess the benefit of compost use in agriculture. This important project is being carried out with collaborators Envirofield, Reading University, Rothamsted and Field Fare Associates.
Animal By-Products Guidance Published by UK Government (DEFRA) (11 July 2003)
On Friday 11 July further guidance on the implementation of the ABPO was published visit the DEFRA ABPO website here and download the .pdf file to find out more.
Comparison of Composting Technologies; Enviros Assist in Research Project (July 2003)
Three composting technologies are being compared over a one-year period. The three systems are:
- Traditional open-air turned windrow system
- Sirocco forced aeration batch container system
- GORE aerated static pile system
Different treatment mixes, covers and aeration profiles will be tested and both feedstocks and composts will be analysed. Finished composts will be included in the London Remade growing trials programme, and funding has been obtained though the Norlands Trust, supported by Thames Waste Management.

New web site for the Composting Community (May 2003)
These are interesting times for composting in the UK. As from the start of the 2003/4 financial year many UK local authorities have been allocated substantial budgets to bring on-stream a variety of waste initiatives, and it seems certain that many composting schemes will be included in the first year of these budgets.
As the additional processing capacity generated by composting projects comes on stream later this year and next, waste separation at source by kerbside collection will begin to be implemented throughout many more UK local authority areas.
Such schemes will have be to successful in generating new markets for compost products, if the government is to begin to achieve the targets set for it by the EU Landfill Directive.
Obtaining sites for these composting facilities is not going to be easy. But at least public hostility is less than for the alternatives of incineration, and with the continuation of landfilling in any form being the least favoured by all, and always highly unpopular to any community in the vicinity, the availability of landfill would be due to diminish, even without the EU Landfill Directive.
This new web site has therefore been created in anticipation of a rising awareness of composting issues, in recognition of the need for a suitable platform for the interchange of news, views, and technical information on commercial composting.
This site is supported by Enviros Consulting, an independent consultancy uniquely in the UK employing a team of composting experts free from all industry ties, and with specialists in all aspects of composting.
Composting can be profitable for Farm Businesses (May 2003)
With profits proving more elusive than ever for Farm Businesses the Compost@Enviros team are convinced that on-farm composting, can prove to be a highly profitable diversification.
The combination of acceptance of local authority green waste from local civic amenity sites, composted by simple windrow techniques. with initial use for organic soil improvement on the farm, which provides a ready initial market, is proving highly successful.
Pilot scale studies conducted over the past few years are now being converted to full scale ventures in many areas. Use of the compost on the farm shows markedly improved yield and quality of crop, even on existing organic methods - reportedly outperforming results previously obtained using chemical fertilsers.
It is therefore not surprising that most farms have so far held back on marketing high quality compost product to the public, but expect market acceptance to grow rapidly when they do.
Our market development experts are pleased to assist any organisation seeking to diversify into farm composting. Click here to complete a contact form to request further information.
Enviros Compost Expert Phil Wallace's prediction proved correct (June 2003)
While the UK's Animal By Products Order (ABPO) remains open to interpretation, now that it has been issued, Phil's prediction of July last year has proven correct.
Phil predicted that: "To comply with the order, all composting of relevant materials will have to be tunnel composted, and clearly this will have a major impact on investment in the industry."
