5. Download here, a report titled Compost and growing media manufacturing in the UK. This report reviews opportunities for the sale and use of composted materials, and was prepared for WRAP in 2002/3, by Paul Waller & Nick Temple-Heald.
It identifies 55 existing sites in the UK, which are known to be producing compost already from green waste. Using data from these sites, the projected increases in green waste production, and a knowledge of the current market, it provides a compost and growing media supply and demand study.
Chart 1 from this report is reproduced below, to highlight the impending marketing challenge.
It is clear from Chart 1 above, that by 2005 something like a doubling of current green compost production is forecast.
We suspect that this will, in fact, prove to be an underestimate of the additional green waste composting activity in this period (2003 to 2005). But even if true, the compost market still needs to be expanded very rapidly indeed, if the market price for all compost is not to fall.
