Compost Specifications for the Landscape Industry
The Compost Specification for the Landscape Industry was developed by the Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP), in conjunction with The Landscape Institute, as part of its commitment to the development of sustainable markets for composted materials. Our team leader Phil Wallace assisted in this project, as did our US associates Ron Alexander Associates.
This specification (published; Autumn 2003) is recommended to landscape architects, and other specifiers, and can be downloaded free as an Acrobat .pdf file here.
Compost is an important product for the landscaping industry since it provides a bulk soil ameliorant while maintaining product consistency and is also an extremely versatile product for improving the physical, chemical and biological characteristics of the soil. A manual is provided that supplies information on a wide range of compost-related subjects, including: the benefits of compost use; the importance of compost usage in the UK; numerical product specifications for various landscape applications; procedural specifications for landscape compost; related background and guidance data; and sourcing and using compost; The information is tailored to allow landscape architects to specify compost for most landscape applications, even though there may be conditions where additional technical assistance may be necessary.
