What is Biowaste?
Biowaste is the biodegradable fraction of waste.
It is a substantial portion (almost 70%) of the municipal waste stream.
It is significant in policy terms because the reduction in landfill of municipal biodegradable waste is the subject of the Landfill Directive UK Waste Reduction targets.
The choice of management techniques for biowaste impacts on climate change. and can impact, beneficially, on soil quality and farming practices and therefore can contribute to a wide range of environmental objectives.
It comprises, broadly, paper and card, green waste and kitchen waste and some textiles. (While man-made textiles are not generally biodegradable and hence not biowaste, the natural materials such as cotton, are.)
